    This class is for students age 8-15. Note that students aged 13+ who prefer to may register for our adult programs.

    Young Knights and Warrior Princesses will learn techniques for spear, sword, and dagger, focusing on how medieval knights fought in armour. No real armour needed!

    Technical instruction will be mixed with games that support fundamental physical movements, and activities will move quickly to keep everyone engaged.

    Every student needs a fencing mask. You can purchase or rent one from us, or use any modern fencing mask in good condition.

    Longsword is the foundation of our combat system. Students wishing to study other weapons at Ottawa Swordplay must complete our Novice Longsword program first.

    The Novice Longsword program is a 10 week course. Students in the course are introduced to our core Novice techniques. Intermediate students participate in the classes for review and as experienced training partners.

    Every student needs a fencing mask. You can purchase or rent one from us, or use any modern fencing mask in good condition.

    Each 1.5 hour class includes 30 minutes of freeplay time.

    This course is open only to women, and is taught by a woman. The curriculum is the same as our regular longsword program, and is open to novice and intermediate students. Our regular classes are all open to all genders.

    Each 90 minute class includes 30 minutes of freeplay time.

    Prerequisite: Students must have completed the Novice Longsword course and either the fall Dagger & Ringen course or the Dagger & Ringen Intensive Workshop to register for this class. 

    This class is our intermediate course for medieval wrestling (Ringen) and dagger. Students will learn and refine techniques for wrestling at the arms and body, and techniques with the rondel dagger in armoured and unarmoured contexts.  This course will focus on techniques while wearing a jacket and belt. 

    Every student needs a fencing mask. You can purchase or rent one from us, or use any modern fencing mask in good condition. Every student also needs a mouth guard, a jacket or sweatshirt that you are comfortable having grabbed and pulled, and a cloth belt. Speak with an instructor for more details. 

    Loaner daggers are available for student use. Gloves are encouraged but not mandatory. Long sleeves are encouraged. 

    Each 90 minute class includes 30 minutes of freeplay time.

    We have a limited number of loaner swords and bucklers, priority always goes to newest students.

    Each 1.5 hour class includes 30 minutes of freeplay time.

    Students in this course should have a good understanding of the principles and techniques of our longsword system. The classes focus on developing a personal "doctrine" of preferred strategy, tactics, and techniques. Students will gain a better understanding distance, timing, and judgement, and how to manage them.

    Every student needs a fencing mask. You can purchase one from us, or  use any modern fencing mask in good condition. 

    Each 1.5 hour class includes 30 minutes of freeplay time.

    The Instructors Sword Lab is a recurring opportunity for instructors from Ottawa Swordplay and other martial arts schools to meet, discuss, and experiment with historical swordplay, pedagogy, and manuscript interpretation.

    This is an opportunity for Schrankhut-ranked students to complete their skills demonstration to earn the rank of Eisenpfort. 

    Students should come prepared with their skills pyramid and are encouraged to bring along a partner who is ready to assist them in demonstrating their chosen techniques. Students can be both a demo partner and undertake their skills demonstration at the same time. 

    Skills demonstration requirements and blank skills pyramids are available at the front desk.

    The skills pyramid portion of the demonstration will be completed between 7 pm and 8 pm, and the freeplay portion of the demonstration will be completed during fight night. Regular drop in fees for fight night apply.
